The first American settlers used the name Beaumont. They were John Beaumont and William Beaumont, sons of Thomas Beaumont sailed to America in 1635. John and his older brother William (b. about 1608) sailed from London on the ship, Elizabeth, on 15 Apr 1635, under William Stagg, Master, bound for New England with eighty or more souls. John Beaumont had one son, John, who shortened his name to Bement. A descendant of John Bement , Makins Bemont after a visit to England, changed the name to Bemont.
