The Bemont name is not the original family name. The name was originally Beaumont, which means beautiful mountain. For a while the family adopted the name Bellemonte which also means beautiful mountain. Then on April 15, John and William Beaumont sailed to America from London, England on the ship the Elizabeth. John’s only son shortened his name to Bement while his uncle retained the original Beaumont.
